Three horizontal bands of red, yellow (double width) and red, with the national coat of arms on the yellow band, set toward the hoist side. The red and yellow colours were chosen in 1785 by King Charles III for the Spanish Navy because they were the easiest to distinguish at sea. The coat of arms combines the historical kingdoms — Castile, León, Aragon, Navarre and Granada — supported by the Pillars of Hercules. Spain has flown variations of this design since 1785. The current civil flag was adopted in 1981 with the post-Franco constitutional monarchy. Practise the Spain flag in the Flagzio Europe flag quiz across all eight game modes.
