Flag of France

Three vertical bands of blue, white and red — the tricolour. Equal proportions, hoist to fly: blue, white, red. Blue and red are the traditional colours of Paris; white was the colour of the monarchy. The combination became a symbol of constitutional monarchy and later the French Republic. The flag emerged during the French Revolution in 1789. The current design was first defined in 1794 and inspired the tricolour template adopted by dozens of countries worldwide, from Italy and Romania to Mexico and Côte d'Ivoire.
