The Union Jack — overlapping red and white crosses on a blue field, combining the crosses of Saint George (England), Saint Andrew (Scotland) and Saint Patrick (Ireland). Each cross represents a patron saint of one of the British nations. The Union Jack symbolises the political union of these nations. The current design dates from the 1801 union with Ireland. The Union Jack appears in the cantons of several other national and sub-national flags including Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Tuvalu, Hawaii and many British dependencies.
