Nine equal horizontal stripes of blue and white, with a white cross on a blue square in the canton. The nine stripes are said to represent the nine syllables of the Greek War of Independence motto 'Eleftheria i Thanatos' (Freedom or Death). The cross represents Greek Orthodox Christianity. The current design was finalised in 1978, but the basic blue-and-white cross-and-stripes scheme dates to the Greek War of Independence in 1821. Practise the Greece flag in the Flagzio Europe flag quiz across all eight game modes.
