Flag of South Korea

A white field with a red and blue Taegeuk (yin-yang) in the centre, surrounded by four black trigrams from the I Ching. White represents peace and purity. The Taegeuk represents balance — opposites in harmony. The four trigrams represent heaven, earth, water and fire. The Taegukgi was first used in 1882 and adopted as the national flag of the Republic of Korea in 1948. Its philosophical symbolism is among the deepest of any national flag.
