Flag of Portugal

Two vertical bands of green (hoist, two-fifths) and red (fly, three-fifths), with the national coat of arms — an armillary sphere over a shield — at the boundary. Green stands for hope and the future; red for the blood of those who died defending the nation. The armillary sphere recalls Portugal's age of maritime discovery. Adopted on June 30, 1911 after the 1910 Republican Revolution that ended the monarchy. The armillary sphere has been a Portuguese symbol since the 15th century reign of King Manuel I.
