Thirteen alternating red and white horizontal stripes representing the original colonies, with a blue canton of 50 white stars for the current states. Red signifies hardiness and valor, white purity and innocence, blue vigilance, perseverance and justice. The 50 stars represent the 50 states; the 13 stripes represent the original 13 colonies. Often nicknamed Old Glory or the Stars and Stripes, the basic design dates to June 14, 1777 — celebrated as Flag Day. The current 50-star version was adopted in 1960 after Hawaii joined the union.
